Glossary – terminology
Hemostatic: Arrests blood flow.
Hepatic: Stimulates function of liver.
Hypertensive: Causes increase in blood pressure.
Hypnotic: Induces sleep.
Hypotensive: Causes reduction in blood pressure.
Irritant: Excites inflammation.
Laxative: Produces gentle action of the bowels.
Lenitive: Capable of easing pain or discomfort.
Lithogenic: Promoting the formation of calculi.
Lithotriptic: Dissolving vesical calculi; also, an agent that so acts.
Mucilage: Contains gelatinous or gummy constituents.
Mucilaginous: Resembling mucilage; moist and sticky.
Narcotic: Induces sleep or unconsciousness.
Natriuretic: A substance that inhibits the resorption of sodium ions from the glomerular filtrate in the
kidneys, thus allowing more sodium to be excreted with the urine.
Nervine: Calms nerves.
Nutrtive: Nourishes and sustains life.
Parasiticide: An agent or preparation used to destroy parasites.
Parturient: Hastens labour.
Parturifacient: Inducing or accelerating childbirth; oxytocic.
Pectoral: Relieves diseases of the lungs.
Prophylactic: Prevents disease.
Ptyalagogue: See Sialagogue.
Purgative: Strong laxative.
