Glossary – terminology
Antiluetic: Effective against syphilis, also known as antisyphilitic.
Antimicrobial: Helps destroy or resist pathogenic micro-organisms.
Antioedemic: Reduces excessive accumulation of serous fluid in tissue spaces or a body cavity.
Antiperiodic: Prevents the periodic recurrence of attacks of a disease.
Antiphlogistic: Reducing inflammation or fever; anti-inflammatory.
Antipyretic: Reduces fever or quells it.
Antirheumatic: Eases inflammation and pain in joints and muscles.
Antiscorbutic: Having the effect of preventing or curing scurvy.
Antiseptic: Inhibits the proliferation of infectious microorganisms.
Antispasmodic: Relieves cramps, prevents or relaxes muscle spasms.
Antitussive: Capable of relieving or suppressing coughing.
Antiuricemic: Reduces uric acid or urates in the blood.
Antizymotic: Preventing fermentation or decomposition.
Aperient: Very mild laxative.
Aphrodisiac: Increases sexual arousal and activity.
Aromatic: Has a pleasant odor, stimulates digestive systems.
Astringent: Contractions and firms up tissue, reduces secretions & discharges.
Balsamic: Restorative; curative; of, relating to, or resembling balsam.
Bitter: Increases tone and activity of gastric mucosa.
Calefacient: An agent that produces a sense of warmth.
Calmative: Gently calms nerves.
Cardiac: Heart stimulant or tonic.
Carminative: Prevents or relieves flatulence.
